Just a brief little post to say Happy New Year and to reflect upon the state of my hangover today. I sincerely hope those of you who had the chance to read my ‘hangover cures’ will have tried number 1, i.e. bacon butty as it certainly helped me.

Every New Year’s Eve I always find it extremely difficult to decide what to do. This year was much the same as every other, my options were as follows:

A) Go on a night out to the same place I always go…(no thanks.)

B) Stay in with my mum and dogs…(as much as I love them…another no.)

C) Decide last-minute to get the train to Exeter to spend an evening in a little town with a LOT of pubs by the sea with one of my best friends…(RESULT!)

The last-minute spontaneous decision definitely paid off. The theme for the New Year’s Eve party was ‘Hunting,’ and so I headed into town to ‘hunt’ through the charity shops for a creative costume.

After visiting 6 charity shops I successfully gathered the necessary attire: Navy Blazer, leggings, black leather boots, black hat and white shirt. Disturbingly my mum provided me with a whip…(it’s not what you think honestly!) Surprisingly after an evening of drinking vodka jelly’s, playing giant jenga and the infamous ‘pass the balloon’ game we still made it into town.

The atmosphere was buzzing as everyone in the village was dressed up in various fancy dress and I don’t think I have ever seen so many pubs in one place, good times. All in all it was a very successful night apart from when a fight broke out in one of the pubs and as I innocently sipped my drink received a side punch to the face. It was accidental and luckily enough the excessive vodka jelly intake helped numb the pain.

As predicted when I woke up this morning my head was pounding and my stomach was churning but thanks to the carbohydrates and protein in a bacon sandwich I was soon on the mend. Happy New Year everyone.

Hangover cures

It’s New Year’s Eve and tomorrow will be the beginning of a new year: 2012. I’m sure many of us will be out celebrating this evening and after several hours of drinking there’s always the dreaded hangover to look forward to in the morning.

Some people are lucky enough not to get them but unfortunately I’m not one of them. I have spent many mornings trying various ways to ‘cure’ my hangover and only some of them have worked and so I have been looking for some to share with you to prepare you for the aftermath of this evenings antics.

1) Bacon Butty.

Now for the science.

Newcastle University Scientists have approved this classic hangover cure. It works thanks to the carbohydrate in the bread, and the protein in the bacon, which breaks down into amino acids that help clear your head.

  Now for the science.

 Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia found a major cause of hangover to be the chemical acetate, which is dissipated by caffeine and some painkillers.

Now for the science.

According to scientists from the Royal Society of Chemistry, the fructose, sodium and potassium in honey help convert hangover-causing acetaldehyde into less-toxic chemicals, speeding recovery.

 

 

Some other tips to help reduce the effects of a hangover:

– Drink plenty of fluids that have electrolytes in them so your body can get back into balance.

-Take a hot shower,  it can help clear your head.

– Relax in a quiet environment (play some soft music and turn off your mobile phone/laptop and TV.)

– Make sure you get plenty of sleep (at least 8 hours.)

– Eat some jelly it can soothe your stomach.
